Yielding no more than a Performance Related Incentive Scheme (PRIS) for the protesting IIT faculty, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday expressed his disapproval for the method and modes of protest being used by the faculty fora to protest against the revised pay notification issued for centrally funded institutions like IITs and IIMs last week.

Saying that it did not sit well on faculty from prestigious institutes like IITs to go on a hunger strike, Sibal defended the ministry and said that in no way could the revised pay structure be termed unfair, as impinging on their autonomy or as over-regulation by the government. He urged the IIT faculty federation to re-think their proposed hunger strike later this week.

“Setting the record straight,” Sibal told reporters that the government has “never interfered” with the autonomy of IITs and was all for strengthening their brand equity, “but the pay system has to be regulated… we have to have some eligibility condition for entry and promotion in faculty. They are opposed to eligibility. This is unfair.”
